Preventive Dental Treatment

Many oral diseases can be prevented with good oral hygiene practice and early treatment. Aside from providing services like regular dental check-up, scaling, dietary advice and oral hygiene instruction, our clinics also offer additional preventive treatments like fissure sealant, fluoride varnish and nightguard, that can help safeguard your teeth against common dental issues.

  • Fissure Sealants
Fissure sealant is a tooth-coloured or transparent material, which is well adhered to the enamel of the tooth. It is a highly effective treatment designed to protect the vulnerable chewing surfaces of your teeth, especially molars and premolars. These back teeth have tiny grooves and crevices, known as fissures, which can trap food particles and bacteria, leading to tooth decay. Fissure sealant seals off the fissures of a tooth to prevent tooth decay by blocking the plaque bacteria in the fissures from getting access to the dietary sugars. The application of fissure sealants is quick, painless, and non-invasive. Fissure sealants are particularly beneficial for children and teenagers, as their newly erupted permanent teeth are more susceptible to decay. However, adults can also benefit from this preventive measure, especially if they have deep fissures on their teeth.
  • Fluoride Varnish
Fluoride varnish is a concentrated form of fluoride that is applied to the teeth to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay. It is a simple and painless procedure that involves painting a thin layer of fluoride varnish onto the tooth surface using a brush. Fluoride varnish offers several benefits. Firstly, it helps remineralize weakened enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and plaque. Secondly, it inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth. Lastly, it can reduce tooth sensitivity and prevent the development of cavities. Fluoride varnish can be particularly beneficial for individuals with a higher risk of tooth decay, such as those with dry mouth, a history of cavities, or orthodontic appliances.
  • Mouth guards
Nightguards, also known as occlusal splints, are custom-made oral appliances designed to protect your teeth from the harmful effects of grinding or clenching, a condition known as bruxism. Bruxism can occur during sleep or even subconsciously during the day, and it can lead to tooth damage, jaw pain, headaches, and other dental problems. A nightguard acts as a cushion between your upper and lower teeth, absorbing the forces generated during grinding or clenching. By providing a barrier, it helps protect your tooth enamel, reduces muscle tension, and alleviates the stress on the jaw joint. Nightguards are typically made of a durable, flexible material and are custom-fitted to your teeth for maximum comfort and effectiveness. Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth to create a nightguard that fits snugly and securely. Prevention is better than cure. Remember to consult with your dentist regularly to determine which preventive measures are most suitable for your specific needs. By taking proactive steps to protect your teeth, you can minimize the need for complicated dental treatment.

Fissure Sealants

  1. Cleaning the tooth surface with a paste and rotating brush. Washing and drying the tooth after that.
  2. Placing an acidic solution on the fissured area of the tooth for a number of seconds before being rinsed off. This creates a fine rougher surface which enables the dental sealant to attach to the tooth well.
  3. Placing the liquid dental sealant on the tooth after the tooth is dried again. Dental sealants are hardened by using a dental curing light. (Sometimes a dentist would use a dental sealant that sets without using a light.)

Fluoride Varnish

  1. Before applying the teeth should be clean and dry. A prophy cup or brush might be used to clean the teeth and remove any debris or plaque.
  2. Using a disposable applicator brush or a microbrush to apply a thin layer of fluoride varnish to the surfaces of the teeth. The varnish should be applied to all tooth surfaces.
  3. After the application, the fluoride varnish should be allowed to dry on the teeth.

Mouth guards

  1. Taking an impression of the teeth. Nightguard can be used for only the upper or lower set of teeth.
  2. The impression will be sent to the dental lab to create the nightguard, which should be available in about one or two weeks.
  3. Try in the nightguard in dental clinic.
